Whales have been sighted in the waters off the golden beaches of the Gold Coast already for the 2017 Gold Coast Whale Watching season. Getaway Sailing is looking forward to the coming 2016 Gold Coast whale watching season. The annual humpback whale migration should start at the end of May with a good flow of whale passing the Gold Coast by the 2and 3 week of June. The population of the east Australia Humpback migration is increasing yearly. The population will be approaching 25000 animals this year so there will be plenty of animals to watch over the 6 month migration.

Close to the end of June 2015 and we have soooooooo many whales traveling north on their annual migration. Humpback whales are cruising past the Gold Coast on their journey to the warmer waters of Queensland for the breeding and birthing grounds of the Great Barrier Reef. Some of these whales will travel as far as Fiji and Tonga for their annual pilgrimage to find a mate. This image was taken in the crystal clear waters of Tonga.

Mid whale watching season 2014 Getaway Sailing and the New Zealand Herald spent some time together with the Humpback whales on the ocean in front of Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast. Anne Gibson was our guest and the Humpbacks did not disappoint. We were treated to a spectacular show of breaching, pectoral slapping with a mother and calf. It has been thought that Humpback whales have not indulged in feeding whilst on migration along the east coast of Australia. However there is growing evidence that humpback whales may feed opportunistically while migrating towards their breeding grounds. An article from The University of Queensland talks of common feeding around Eden on the southern New South Wales coast line. Humpback whales are seen feeding between September and November each year as they migrate south towards their Antarctic feeding grounds for the southern hemisphere’s summer.
