It has been thought that Humpback whales have not indulged in feeding whilst on migration along the east coast of Australia. However there is growing evidence that humpback whales may feed opportunistically while migrating towards their breeding grounds. An article from The University of Queensland talks of common feeding around Eden on the southern New South Wales coast line. Humpback whales are seen feeding between September and November each year as they migrate south towards their Antarctic feeding grounds for the southern hemisphere’s summer.

Getaway Sailing on the Gold Coast will be conducting private Gold Coast whale watching charters during the 2015 Gold Coast whale watching season. The annual humpback migration starts at the end of May 2015 and continues through until the start of November 2015. Last season Getaway Sailing was the first to find humpbacks cruising north in the third week of May (2014).  Seven News used the footage below in a short story of our find.

In the last week of September 2014 we have been blessed with Humpback whales being playful, breaching, tail slapping and frolicking around with Getaway Sailing on the Gold Coast and Whales in Paradise. Getaway Sailing was in the right place at the right time and captured some  wonderful footage of these whale encounters. A juvenile humpback whale gave an awesome encounter with Getaway Sailing on the Gold Coast whilst on a private  Gold Coast whale watching charter. This massive mammal played around the yacht for 5 hours and gave us an amazing experience showing the wide open mouth many times and breaching once.

Getaway Sailing on the Gold Coast was fortunate to be able to give the editor of Weekend Notes one of our private whale watching tours during the northern bound section of the annual humpback whale migration along the east coast of Australia. Saturday the 14th of June was over cast and cool with a fresh WNW breeze blowing. Great for sailing and great for Whale watching.
