Close to the end of June 2015 and we have soooooooo many whales traveling north on their annual migration. Humpback whales are cruising past the Gold Coast on their journey to the warmer waters of Queensland for the breeding and birthing grounds of the Great Barrier Reef. Some of these whales will travel as far as Fiji and Tonga for their annual pilgrimage to find a mate. This image was taken in the crystal clear waters of Tonga.

We are now into the 3rd week of the Gold Coast whale watching season passing us on their annual migration along the east coast of Australia. Getaway Sailing has had a 100% sighting success rate in the 5 years we have been operating Gold Coast whale watching tours. This season we still have that 100% success. I have conducted 5 whale watching tours to date this season with humpbacks and dolphins on all of these tours.

Whale Watching 2014 Season

We are 2 months away from the first of the Humpback whales which will be migrating past the Gold Coast during 2014 season. These animals travel from the cold waters of Antarctica where they have been feeding themselves for the last 5-6 months on the abundant food source in the polar region. Last Sunday we were treated to an amazing event! Whilst sailing home from a whale watching tour we came across a humpback whale calf feeding on Coral spawn. The coral spawn trail was about 7 NM east of the Gold Coast Seaway, around 300 meters across and at least 1NM long.

The humpback whale calf was born this season along the Queensland coast line and was traveling with it’s mother (known as the cow)

With the Brisbane Whale Watching season for 2013 underway there no better time to spend a day with these massive mammals. Here at Getaway Sailing we offer private whale watching tours for groups of up to 8 passengers. Our day with the whales is aboard our Dufour 35 French built yacht. Whales have been increasing in number off the the NSW North coast. Byron Bay is one of the best places to view humpback whales from land. The headland with the light house is the eastern most point of Australia and is a cliff face high above the waters edge.This gives us the closest possible land based platform to view these majestic animals.
